Want to check the condition of your roof? Grab a flashlight and head to the attic for an interior roof check!

Performing a roof check from the inside out is a great way to get the whole story on the current condition of your roof.  Take a bright flashlight up to your attic and check for a few obvious signs that it might be time for a needed repairs.

  • Before you turn your flashlight on, see if you notice any streams of light coming through cracks in your roof. If you do see any light coming through your roof, repair or replace your roof immediately. If light is getting through your roof, then water is also getting through your roof.
  • If you notice dark streaks and stains on the underside of the roof or running down the walls, then your roof is probably leaking, and this can really damage the roof and your home’s interior. If you do see sagging areas in your roof from below, use your hand or a broom to lightly touch the sagging spot. If the spot feels soft, wet or bends easily, you know you have water damage.
  • When you check for dark streaks and sagging areas also look for obvious water leaks or rotting on the inside. These signs of water damage should be addressed right away.

Is it finally time for a new roof?

Is it finally time for a new roof?

Here are a few obvious and not so obvious signs!

All roofs eventually reach the end of their life span despite years of careful maintenance. If you notice that your roof looks old and worn and you find yourself doing a lot of preventative maintenance, it might be time for a new roof.

Here are some signs to be aware of that might indicate it’s time to replace your roof.

  • Shingle edges are cracked, curled or buckled.
  • There are bald spots where granules are missing.
  • Your roof is over 20 years old and just looks old and worn.
  • There is obvious moss on the roof indicating there may be trapped moisture.
  • The neighbors are getting new roofs. Homes built around the same time can wear out in the same timeframe.
  •  You have a droopy, sagging roof with signs of rotting boards, or sagging spots—especially at the lowest points in the roof.

Checking your own home improvement records gives you a good overview of your roof’s history including installation and repairs. This can make it clear to you that it is time to replace the roof.

No Homeowner Wants Mold to Take Hold! Regular Roof Maintenance Stops Mold in its Tracks!

Mold is a big factor when it comes to the health and longevity of your roof. Mold is not only unappealing, mold on your roof is also unsightly and even possibly dangerous. And you definitely want to keep it away from your home’s interior, your family and pets. When mold appears on the outside or the roof of your house, it can grow and damage the home’s structure. Mold appears on wood and weakens it. Over time this can have drastic consequences to your roof and home.

Regular maintenance inspections of your roof can reveal the underlying issues that may be causing mold growth. A roofing professional can identify any issues with mold and then take the appropriate steps to remove it. Effective cleaning is the best way to head off this problem. This can be done with a bleach solution and scrubbing for small jobs and hiring a professional for the bigger jobs. Royal Crown Roofing offers a soft wash roof cleaning that is very effective.

A Water Spot On Your Ceiling? What Is Your Roof Really Trying to Tell You?

A Water Spot On Your Ceiling? What Is Your Roof Really Trying to Tell You?

There’s a water spot on your ceiling!  What exactly does that mean about the condition of your roof? Actually, it can mean several things. Water spots on the ceiling don’t automatically mean the roof is leaking. The water spot could be caused by windows, condensation, plumbing, or even condensation on the plumbing pipes.  However, if the spots only appear, darken, or grow in size after it rains, a leaky roof is most likely the answer.

If you do determine that the water spot is caused by a leak it can be tricky to pinpoint. A slow leak is much harder to locate than a big leak.  This is compounded by the fact that water doesn’t necessarily drip straight down. It can travel along roof panels or lumber in the attic before dripping onto your insulation and leaving the water spot on your ceiling far from the source. When it comes to roof leaks, you’ll definitely want to enlist a roofing specialist to help track down the cause of the problem.

Can Regular Maintenance of Your Roof Help You Be More Energy Efficient? Absolutely!

Can Regular Maintenance of Your Roof Help You Be More Energy Efficient? Absolutely!

You may not have given it much thought, but the condition of your roof can be very important to your wallet! A proper, well maintained roof can greatly reduce your home energy costs year after year. Proper insulation reduces the exchange of heat through a surface such as a wall, attic, duct or roof. A roof that is in optimal shape with good insulation and a proper ventilation system will keep your home’s indoor temperature steady. This helps to keep your home more comfortable and can significantly cut down on energy costs.

If there are issues with your roof and shingles this can directly impact your insulation. Water damage to insulation makes it impossible for your insulation to do its job and your home becomes less energy efficient.

Regular roof maintenance checks will ensure that your roof and your insulation are in the best possible condition to keep your home comfortable and energy efficient for years to come.
